CEREC Crown
Lincoln Park, NJ

Close up of a CEREC machine milling a new dental crownCavities, breakages, and discolorations can be distressing, and can cause great concern for your oral health. This type of damage to your teeth, however, can be restored through dental crowns. A crown is simply a fitted cap that is placed over the tooth to cover and protect the compromised area.

A dental crown will help you in several ways, including restoring the health of your mouth, and preventing further damage from spreading to other teeth. At The Implant Center at Comprehensive Dental, we understand how much you value your beautiful, natural smile.

For this reason, we advise our clients to have a crown placed on a damaged tooth as soon as possible. Our team will analyze your case and recommend the best options. CEREC crowns are the most popular tooth crowns due to the ease of the procedure, and their attractiveness.

What Is a CEREC Crown?

This type of tooth crown is made out of ceramic and is designed through a computer model to fit the exact size of your original tooth. Traditionally, permanent crowns were made out of metals such as gold or resin. However, the introduction of durable ceramic has made the process much more effective.

The term CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. As the name suggests, the CEREC crown procedure is more economical versus other crowns. In addition, if you choose to have a CEREC, you will only have to book one appointment.

Unlike traditional crowns that require at least two different sessions, the design, production, and installation of a CEREC crown is completed all in the same day at our in-house lab - so they are sometimes referred to as same day crowns.

Strength and Durability of CEREC Crowns

Since they are installed in one sitting, one of the main CEREC crown benefits, some people assume that they are weaker than traditional crowns. In reality, CEREC crowns are just as durable as metallic or resin.

The crown can last for a period between 10 to 30 years, which is similar to other types of crowns. In the installation process, our dentists will use a computer-aided design (CAD) to capture the digital image of your tooth and jaw. The dentist will then design your crown based on the images, create one, and install it on the spot.

Is the Procedure Painful?

The installation is not painful unless you suffer from gum disease or your tooth root is infected. However, if you do experience any discomfort, we will use anesthesia to numb the tooth and reduce the possibilities of any such issues. In most cases the installation might feel a little irritating, but not painful.

You may experience minor bleeding after the procedure, but this is not uncommon. Since the entire procedure happens in one appointment, our dentist will provide detailed step-by-step information about everything you might need to know.

Why Do I Need a Tooth Crown?

Dental crowns are a versatile treatment used in a variety of situations. They are essentially a cap that fits over an existing tooth to support weak or damaged teeth or cover up misshapen, worn-down or discoloured teeth. Crowns may also replace a missing tooth as part of a dental implant or an implant-supported dental bridge.

Why Choose Zirconia?

At The Implant Center at Comprehensive Dental, we offer a variety of dental crowns options. Zirconia crowns are made from zirconium dioxide. Although it is a metal oxide and related to the titanium family, it is supplied to dentists as a white, ceramic block. Crowns made with zirconia are becoming more common as they do offer advantages over other materials.

Zirconia is compatible with the human body. It is unlikely to produce an immunological reaction. Zirconia is a strong material. It is even capable of withstanding the forces exerted on the teeth at the back of the mouth. One recent research study concluded that Zirconia crowns lasted just as well as metal-based crowns over a five-year period.

Zirconia crowns are designed by our dentists using the latest technology, including digital pictures and computer software. The finished design is sent to a milling machine in our onsite lab, which creates your crown while you wait. Meanwhile, your tooth will be prepared by the dentist to receive the crown. When the crown is ready, the dentist will cement it into place on the same day.

How Long Do Zirconia Crowns Last?

Crowns made from other materials tend to have a limited lifespan - although it may be up to 15 years. Zirconia is resistant to fracturing or cracking and it is entirely possible they may last a lifetime.

Disadvantages of Zirconia Crowns

All materials used for dental crowns have benefits and drawbacks. Zirconia is a reasonably new material for crowns when compared to how long ceramic, composite and metal have been used. There are, therefore, fewer studies about zirconia crowns, although the material has been thoroughly tested for safety.

That said, the disadvantages of zirconia crowns are few. One of the primary issues about zirconia is the effect it has on surrounding teeth, as the durability of the material raises concerns about it wearing down nearby teeth. However, regular check-ups with The Implant Center at Comprehensive Dental will ensure that everything in your mouth is as it should be.

Another criticism of zirconia crowns is regarding its aesthetic qualities. Opaque rather than translucent, zirconia may not look as natural as porcelain and is, therefore, more suitable just for back teeth rather than visible front teeth. However, the newest generation of materials deliver excellent cosmetic results to exceed our patient's demands for the highest quality.
