How to Know if a Wisdom Tooth Is Impacted

Woman holding her hand to her painful jawWisdom teeth, or third molars, erupt between the late teens and early twenties. This eruption is orderly in some people, but in others, it is not so straightforward. Among the most common problems is impaction. Impaction can be caused by inadequate space for the tooth to emerge properly or by an abnormal eruption angle. Here is how you can tell if a wisdom tooth is impacted:

Pain and Discomfort

One experiences continuous severe pain behind the mouth. Pain radiates to the jaw, ears, and head and worsens with chewing motion.

Swelling and Redness

An inflamed, impacted wisdom tooth will cause swelling and redness in the surrounding area. This might sometimes be visible in the mirror or detectable when touching swollen tissue with the tongue.

Smelly Breath and Bad Taste

Impacted teeth grow toward gum tissue, leaving a flap through which bacteria can grow. This causes bad breath and an awful taste in the mouth.

Difficulty Opening Your Mouth

If you struggle to open your mouth, or it will not open very wide, and your jaw feels stiff. This could indicate an impacted tooth.

Lymph Nodes Swelling

The lymph nodes in your neck could be sensitive or swollen in case of an infection. The infection can be associated with an impacted wisdom tooth.

Crowded Teeth

Impacted teeth will put pressure the surrounding teeth, making them shift position. This can lead to noticeable misaligned or crowded teeth.

Diagnosis and Treatment

If you believe that your wisdom tooth is impacted, it provides a very important reason to see your dentist. They will carry out an oral assessment and, if necessary, take X-rays to establish a diagnosis of an impacted tooth. Treatments often range from monitoring your tooth, prescribing antibiotics for infection, or removing teeth to avoid further complications.

So do not ignore the signs of a painful wisdom tooth, as detection and treatment at an early stage will free you from pain and dental complications.
