Should I Be Concerned About Energy Drinks and My Dental Health?

Beautiful woman showing off her brilliant teeth with a smileEnergy drinks are a factor of life for many people. In fact, as many as 30 percent of all American adults drink at least one energy drink each day. More than any other age group, young adults under 40 are the most common energy drink users. Will energy drinks cause problems for your dental health? Here is some information about energy drinks and your dental health.

What Are Energy Drinks?

Energy drinks are more than a simple burst of caffeine. Each serving usually contains as many as four cups of coffee. They also have a ton of added sugar and usually contain other natural stimulants such as guarana or taurine. Consuming one energy drink is normally safe for adults unless you have an underlying condition, such as heart issues. However, the more energy drinks you consume, the more unhealthy they are.

How Can Energy Drinks Hurt My Teeth?

There are several ways energy drinks can hurt your teeth. First, energy drinks contain a lot of acids because of the carbonation. These acids can begin to erode your tooth enamel, which leaves your teeth more prone to cavities and gum disease. Your teeth may also break or crack more easily.

Also, energy drinks contain a lot of refined sugar - as much as 20 teaspoons of sugar per serving. The recommended daily allotment of sugar for adults is around 7 teaspoons, depending on your gender. Each time you consume an energy drink, you are drinking up to three times the amount of sugar you should be having.

All that excess sugar is very harmful to your teeth and gums. Your mouth has both helpful and harmful bacteria. One of the keys to great dental health is limiting the amount of bad bacteria you have in your mouth because those bad bacteria cause periodontal disease and tooth decay. If you do not limit your sugar, it is bad for both your oral health and your overall health.
